Aaron Krueger, IT Manager, and that’s me trying on the ‘Chandler Smile’

This is harder than I thought.

See, here’s the thing. I know how to work as an Information Systems Manager, I’ve been doing that for years, decades.

I know what an Information Systems manager does, I could write you a list of all the things you need to learn to be able to plan, direct, coordinate and lead all the computer systems processes in a company.

I know how important it is for me to correctly assess the IT goals of the company I consult with, I know the extent to which I’m responsible for making sure all implementation is goal oriented, timely and smooth.

I know how to do all that. What I don’t know how to do, is write about it. And that’s what I’m here to learn. By using Medium as a journal of sorts, I hope to practice and improve my ability to communicate aspects of IT administration and management.

Why, you ask? Because I’ve learned a lot of ‘best practices’ after years consulting in the industry, and I hope to someday turn it into a book. Most books in IT are very good when it comes to explaining technical specifications, but fare poorly in terms of “big picture” career advice. I’ve mentored over a hundred young interns and IT professionals who’ve worked under me over the years, and what I’ve found to be the case is that technical problems aren’t their biggest sticking point. Most IT systems manager struggle with work-life balance, the intensity and low response times needed leads to a lot of lifestyle stress, and gender biases in the workplace (still unfortunately omnipresent in the IT industry) leads to social isolation for people working in Information Systems.

As someone who’s “been there, done that” I hope to write about this some day, either in a how-to format, or a self-indulgent memoir. But in either case, if I plan to write a book, I must first get comfortable with the idea of writing a blog post.

So that’s what brought me to Medium.

Why should you read my blog? I have no idea, yet. If you want to analyze computer needs of your organization and recommend that top managers consider possible upgrades, you probably have better resources than what I’ll be writing here.

On the other hand, if you’re a career IT consultant or employee in an organization, and you like reading “slice-of-life” posts, and overarching principles of how to succeed in your organization, you may have come to the right place.
